Resources- Employer- Interview Tips

Preparing for the interview

YPW suggests you request candidates to bring their drivers license, original copy of their police clearance and a copy of relevant qualifications to the interview so you can view these.
Prepare for the interview by reviewing the candidate’s resume and listing any specific questions you may like to ask.
Have a detailed job description ready to provide to the candidate (you may choose to provide this prior to the interview to allow them time to review and list their own questions).
Consider providing a copy of the employment agreement that will be put in place (excluding salary and other information you may have yet to decide on) to enable candidates to review and ask any initial questions.

Commencing the interview

  • Take the time to introduce yourself and provide a business card if you have one so candidates can see your name and title.
  • Establish a rapport with the candidate with a few informal moments as you commence the interview.

During the interview

  • Clearly articulate the skills required in the role, the challenges, business as usual components and any special projects.
  • Summarise the culture and environment they will be working in.
  • Provide a brief history on the role and also the business if applicable.
  • Have candidates meet anyone they will have direct contact with including their manager if applicable.
  • Give candidates the opportunity to ask any questions they may have.
  • Arrange a tour of the workplace for the candidate.
  • Have any marketing information available for candidates to take away.
  • Define the timeline for completing the process (you may like to let them know how many people you are interviewing, etc).
