Resources- Candidate- Tips for Your First Day
Here are some tips to help make a good first impression and have a good first day all round!
- Make a courtesy call a few days before you start to confirm your start date, the time and the address.
- Ask for suggestions on available parking or close by bus stops.
- Reread any reading matter you have on your employer and visit their website before your first day.
- Have your breakfast (or any other meal) before you put on your work clothes...just in case.
- If you can, wait to put your work clothes on until you are nearly ready to walk out the door.
- Dress appropriately for the job.
- Take a notebook and some stationary (eg pens, pencils, calculater) with you.
- Arrive 5 or 10 minutes early. (You don't want to be late, yet being 30 minutes early can be just as difficult)
- Make sure you pack some lunch, but be prepared to go out with your new collegues as it is a good ice breaker.
- You will probably meet a number of people on your first day, greet them confidently, with a smile and a handshake.
- Repeat everyone's name back to them when you shake hands to help remember as many of them as possible.
- Write some brief notes about your day as you go or when you get home if you don't have time during the day.
- Most of all Enjoy Your Day!!!
